Post subject:  Band Adjustment Tools (?) for 904 Trans

On doing a band adjustment, one step in my factory manual reads: "Using wrench, Tool C-3380 with adapter C-3705, tighten band adjusting screw..."

I gather tool C-3380 is simply an inch-pounds torque wrench - will any old one do? And is adapter C-3705 necessary? The manual implies it's not.

Just trying to get all my ducks in a row before I start taking things apart. Thanks very much.

I use any wrench to hold the adjuster while locking down the nut. Yes use any inch/pound torque wrench to adjust.

The last time I adjusted the bands in the 904 in my brother's van, I followed slantzilla's advice and screwed the adjuster down finger tight then backed it off 1.5 turns. So far, so good.

For the adapter you can use either an 8 or 12 point socket that fits.

Tool c-3705 isn't needed, but an inch-pound torque wrench is a must.Check the 7 digit part# to find out what year the trans is,and find adjustment info for the exact year. The adjustment specs changed several times, might not be the same for S/6s and V-8s and your trans might not be the original one.Tool 3705 alters the torque reading of the torque wrench,so use the "true torque" specs. You will also need a 5/16 4 or 8 point socket,or a metric 12 point may work

Awesome. Thanks so much, guys. I will employ all of your advice. I got the torque wrench and I'll attack it this weekend.

Note that the bands don't take all that much torque, so get a little 1/4" drive torque wrench; I've an inexpensive click model that I've used for years taht seems fine.
