I've been putting together an Emergency Road Kit in the trunk of my 64 Dart 270 w/225/904. The car is not equipped with A/C or radio. Has anyone purchased a 50 or 60 amp alternator recently (new or remanufactured) and is pleased enough with its performane to recommend it? On the Rockauto site I saw a couple of single pulley alternators that appear to be adequate: REMY Part #20160 (50 AMP) for $51.99 and an $8.00 core charge; AND a Bosh Part #AL504X for $53.79 AND an $11.00 core charge. Thanks in advance for any input you might have.

Forget that "remanufactured" trash. Call Old Car Parts Northwest (206-300-1083) and get from him a new Chrysler alternator. Specify a 46-to-50-amp item. Install it on your car and keep the one you take off as a spare.

Thank you Dan for the sage advice. Any recommendation for the right voltage regulator while I'm on a roll?

I upgraded my van with the componets off a boneyard 73 Dart. I grabbed the alt, regulator and as much wiring as I could and followed this. http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Elec ... arging.htm There's tons of info here for Mopars and have been running this setup for over 6 years now and I'm very happy with it, alt. works great! It's like a 65 amp alternator from the 37 amp that was in there. I can't understand why people still want to use the little black box regulators [transistor or point style] when the newer ones are so much better. Good Luck

If you are sticking with the '64-type charging circuit w/single field wire, and there's no real reason to do otherwise, use a NAPA Echlin VR-1001 or a Standard VR-128.

Bigger concern than alternator reliability is circuit capacity. See here.

For that matter, you may want to read here, too.
