at the local swap meet this past weekend I walked up on a mopar aluminum small block - steel inserted flywheel.
The ring gear and steel insert were rusty,,the aluminum looked like it had been out in the weather. Some use was evident around the bolt holes, but the surface was not totally galled.
there were four about 1 in od balance holes drilled into the back side of the flywheel close to the OD,, from the oxidation, these looked newer than the rest of the machining on the part.

I asked for a price and got 75.00 which sounded really cheap,, I looked but did not see a manufacturer name, there may have been a part number stamped in. I do not recollect what it was. So I asked if the seller knew the manufacturer or if the part was SFI.. I got back " you want a 400 dollar part at a give away price,, " so I handed the flywheel back and went on my way.
1) I don't buy any part, especially safety parts unless I know exactly what I am looking at,, so are certified flywheel's and housings marked?
2) How does the steel insert work? I had heard the steel inserts are replaceable,, how is that done.
3) Should I have grabbed that 75.00 dollar flywheel,, if so should a used aluminum flywheel be checked?,, X ray maybe? The newer drilled balance holes were a red flag,, but maybe that is typical..

John, the ring is replaceable. I am not sure of the process though. I thought they were user serviceable though.

Flywheels only got SFI ratings in recent years. An older piece would not have one.

The balance holes would lead me to believe it was either a 340 wheel they were trying to make work on a 360, or a 360 piece they were trying to put on a 340.

$75 wasn't a bad price, IF the guy could have answered the question about the holes.
