Tried search and didn't find an answer. Does the cone style sure grip need the same lube as a clutch style?

The cone stile is “Auburn Gearâ€￾ limited slip. Look here, here for examples. I don’t believe that cone stile can be rebuilt like a clutch plate type limited slip can.

My 8 3/4 rear has the Auburn stile limited slip.

So, what kind of lube did you put in it, and why?

Sorry, forgot that lube question last post…

I used a 80/90 gear oil with a tube of limited slip additive. It seems to be working just fine. My rear had been beat hard and put away wet one too many times from excessive drag racing years ago. It had a good load clunk when changing from D to R & R to D, as well as some noise going down the road.

My machinist shimmed her up, and got rid of the clunk at gear change. There is a little whine going down the road, but with twin turbo mufflers, and top down one would never notice it, particularly at 2500 rpm.

Additionally I have the “Green Gearingsâ€￾ installed, not the factory tapered bearings, and 3.55:1 ratio.

Thanks hantayo13 and wjajr for your replies, but what I really want to know, is, since there are no clutches, is the additive necessary?

That cone acts as a clutch, so use an additive, or limited slip rated lube.

No, it's not necessary. The cone-type posi (or limited slip, or whatever you want to call it-it's still a posi-tive traction device) uses no paper-type clutches. It's all metal, so you don't need additive. I ran basic gear oil in mine, and except for one rebuild (yes, they can be rebuilt) and it ran fine for years.

Careful:

" All Auburn Gear differentials require a high quality non-synthetic 80W90 GL-5 gear oil. Treat the oil with Auburn Gear, GM, or Ford additive. 3 ounces of additive per 1 quart of oil. A 6 oz. bottle of additive comes with each Auburn unit. "

Right from the Auburn Web site. It's cheap and wont hurt EVEN if it doesn't require it, which I believe it does.

Additive in a cone type unit will often help if the unit chatters going around corners, but I never needed it.
