Well after countless hours of work and tons of money out of my pocket, the 18 y/o stepsons 84 Ram Pickup is a goner!!!

Got her running cherry and reliable, thanks for all the good info on this forum that I relied on. Was grandpa's truck in a past life.

It was free to him and he never appreciated the nice classic he had! Got drunk last Saturday night and rolled it at 3:30am. He is unhurt thank god but now has nothing but a handful of tickets!

Next vehicle is out of HIS POCKET! :/ Grrrrrrr!!!!!

Sorry to hear that. You know, many body parts for 84 pickups are available new and they body interchanges through 91 or 93 I believe. Maybe he should have to repair the truck? If it isn't to far gone that is.

I've seen that happen before... no "skin in the game" so the old vehicle doesn't get treated right.

Glad he's ok, sorry for your loss!

I'm so pissed I can't see straight! They abandoned the vehicle to go sober up. We were calling and texting him all morning Sunday because he was late for work. Next thing was a State Trooper at our door. We feared the worst of course! Said they found it upside down and abandoned. Wanted to talk to him. So did we!

Still denies drinking, although I confiscated his phone and found a text from 2 hours before his crash stating he was 'blackout drunk' and driving home! He says he was joking and still sticks to his sober story, LOL!!! F' ME!!! was I born yesterday?????? Still has a disrespectful attitude.

Damn, can't wait till he really is an adult (as he tells us all the time), moves out and meets the 'real world' head-on!!!!

Sorry......Ranting!

Your first post took the correct path. His next vehicle is on him. Everyone does stupid stuff when they are young... he'll learn. Hopefully!

I'd be way more concerned about the drinking and lying than the truck.

Just sayin'.

Yeah, the lying thing has been an issue for years! There is even more ridiculousness to the wreck story that I haven't went into.

Lies caught last week, sneaking out after bedtime etc.

Am frustrated, asked him if he wants to be known as a liar or a trustworthy person? He knows when we say something it can be trusted! Not so for him! I hate it but not winning this battle. Just the 'stepdad' of 8 years! Be glad to see an 'empty nest' someday, sorry!!!!! 4 stepkids, 4 attitudes, even talk to mom like sh!t. Can't even shame them, and can't beat them, they were taught the number to Family Services in Kindergarten!

More, More, More to this story! Grrrrrrrr!

Sorry to hear your frustration. Even though I"m not a parent, for the life of me I can't understand why parents give/buy/whatever let them have a vehicle at that age and younger. Kids have no sense of appreciation for anything at that age, i.e. they just don't care! I had to wait till I was 20 before I got my first vehicle, I either was taking the bus or biking it, or bummin a ride from friends! Dad sets the grounds rules there of I pay for gas and repairs and he'd pay insurance. Seeing the price of repair shops made me learn to repair it myself and take a little better care of the beater I had and not abuse it. Boy, will he be in for a big surprise when he gets his first auto insurance bill!

Sorry to hear about the totaled vehicle but be thankful nobody was hurt.

I feel your pain on parenting teens... my wife and I are just coming out of that, you just have to "stay on them" and set the best example as you can.

As we struggled with our teenage daughter, a friend said it best: "being a teenager is temporary insanity... they eventually get thru it".
We hit bottom with our daughter at age 17 and ended-up shipping her off to a troubled teen "working ranch" in utah.
Those ranch hands did wonders... they kicked her pretty little a$$ for 4 months. The POS, lying, cheating teen we sent-off to "the ranch", came back a very different person... not perfect but now "workable" and resonable, as a responsible young lady should be.

So when teens start to "run a-muck", seriously think about getting the "mis-focused" young people out of their current environment and into a situation that is closer to nature and "basic living"... that helps them put everything into perspective.
Just my 2 cents...
DD

I'm 24, Bought my First car (1966 Fury) when I was nineteen, before that had a 91 Ford Tempo given to me by my older brother (which my parents bought new) when he was done with it. At this point My now wife had gone through 84 Mustang and a 96 Caviler( given to her by step Dad, great guy) cars both the cars were totaled, and there I was with with my beater that died from engine failure 2nd enginge and body was done, but she limped me 40kms back home doing 70kms.

Even thought It was given to me I still took care of her. I guess the thing was that I grew up in that car, we went every where in it. The wife was hard on her cars. I guess some people think they need to buy the vehicle to take care of them. Who knows.

Here in Manitoba, He'd get a DUI, Damaging property, and wouldn't be able to drive for a year/ huge sir charge on license.

My first car was given to me for free. It was a $100 1977 volare wagon. The car was 21 years old at the time and I was 18. My older brother blew its original engine when he needed a car to get to work. I replaced the engine with a 250,000 miles slant and drove it until I was 21. No major problems for almost 4 years. i still miss that car.

Why not pull the Slant and trans, if in good shape? Someone here can use them, or you could use them later...

You'll excuse my dissenting opinion. I would reserve my "thank god" in this case for the fact that he didn't happen to kill anyone…this time. He's going to do it again, or something equally thoughtless, and next time he probably will kill somebody, or perhaps several somebodies.

"Next vehicle"…? Really?
