Hi blind or no it is a pain - best permanent relief from this pain is to go with an mopar electronic dizzy fired by an HEI module

Remove distributor cap. Rotate engine by hand until rotor points to a very recogniseable/repeatable position (12:00 straight up or 3:00 straight forward is what I usually use). Remove distributor, noting how rotor turns counterclockwise as you do so. Replace points and condenser on bench, reinstall distributor (start with rotor turned a little counterclockwise of whichever position you moved the engine to point the rotor to -- verify the rotor winds up back where it started before you pulled the distributor). Start engine, adjust timing.

Then save yourself the damnuisance and hassle of ever having to do this again; go to electronic ignition.
