Hi,
I'm new here but have recently bought yet another 1968 dodge dart. This one has a slant six in it and would like to know if this is the original engine. The only numbers I have found so far are located above the left side motor mount and are,
2806830-4
121271 aawj upside down W

I've been told by the identification plate that the car originally came with the 170 motor. I want to keep this one as original as possible and use it for my summer driver as it's very clean. basicly no options but very clean. Thanks for all your help, Dan Brooks

Welcome here. Find the numbers stamped on the top surface of the block, facing the sky, below the frontmost spark plug, inboard of the coil/alternator bracket. You will usually have to scrape and clean away grease and crud to see them.

What are you seeing on the ID plate that tells you that?

The casting number is for an iron 225. It's not a 170.

I had someone else decode this tag through the gts registry for me, doesn't mean he's right but he's the only person I know who does this kind of stuff. If you know of someone else who can do it I'd love to give the information to them as well. I'll look for the other numbers tomorrow, Thanks, Dan.

Whatever the car originally came with, it has a 225 in it now.

Scan a pencil rubbing of the fender build tag, or post a clear picture of the tag, and someone here can decode it for you.

The bottom line of the fender tag should start with an Exx.

E11 would be a 170
E24 would be a 225

Ceej, it's a '68. Last year for the old-style damn-near-unparsable fender tags.

What is the car's VIN?

Ahhh! That's why I shouldn't try to decode stuff!

Didn't the '68 have a build sheet in the back seat or behind the glove box? Or is that from my Disco era cars as well?

My 64 had a build sheet under the rear seat AND behind the glove box.
