I was looking through a thread here that discussed modifying a stock 1bbl intake manifold for a 2bbl. That had me asking the simple question of what benefits would I see from having a 2bbl rather than 1bbl.

I get the impression that just upgrading to a 2bbl setup on an otherwise stock motor with HEI increases power and MPG. Is that true or it there more to it than that?

Yes, more HP for sure and your MPG may go up depending on your state of tune. Mine stayed the same at around 21-23 mpg but I haven't messed too much with jetting. Modifying a one barrel intake could be a fun project, but you may want to keep an eye open for the factory two barrel intakes as they do come up for sale sometimes. You'll need to sort out the fuel line and throttle/kickdown linkage as well as the choke. There are TONS of threads about this stuff so just start reading.

I didn't feel the real benefits until I opened up flow at the other end of the equation with a single 2 1/4" exhaust and freer flowing muffler.

I run a Carter BBD with mine, but you can also put on a Holley 2280 or a Weber for more tune-ability.

I'm currentley modifying a 1bbl aluminum manifold. I was going to do super six but decided I'm just going to skip that and got to throttle body. Yeah I know mpfi is better but for now I want to take on challenge at a time. So im modifying the single barrel for tbi. Have it ground down level, now I need to get the throttle body and a mount.

Just did a similar thing waiting for my 350 holley #7448 to turn up. I also agree that you will want to upgrade your exhaust to notice a difference.

The upgrade to a 2 barrel with the stock exhaust still made a world of difference in how my truck drives. The only mods are an HEI and the holley 2 barrel.

In my opinion, a nicely tuned 2bbl will get you the same mileage as a nicely tuned 1bbl, except you'll be able to driver faster while doing it.
