howdy folks, i have a 727 sitting behind my trusty slant in my 66 a100 and the shift from 1st to 2nd seems a bit hard... it really winds out in first before shifting... drops into 3rd nicely though... is this just a kick down linkage adjustment or do i need to drop the pan and give her a tweak?

I would go after a sticky 1,2 shift valve, the goveror pressure overrides the kickdown at a certain speed (other end of valve). If th 2,3 shift will do all you ask and first and second gear are good physicaly, a delay might be that it sticks untill the govenor pressure is high enough.
I would take the valve body down and inspect the 1,2 shift curcuit, (two valves and a ball or something).
The obstuction could fall away with fluid when you remove the valve body so if you don't find something its o.k., you might look for a little speck of dark like sand or gasket or you might look for a little glob of cloth saturated with tranny fluid. Pull some fuzz of a shoelace and mix it with tranny fluid if you want an idea.
Even transmission shops won't clean a valve body on a rebuild unless that was diagnoised so trust me you don't want to add to you problems.

Should be cut and dry operation with a service manual to find the shift valve, and pay attention to the torque of the valve body bolts, you can warp the valve body with pressure from a screw driver and you hand.

Check to see the kickdown linkage is set correctly first. Might be it is set to long.
