Hey everyone I have a 1975 dodge dart, 225 and need to change the u joints. Is this something I could do on my own or will I need a shop to do this repair? It does not seem to hard but not sure how to go about it. Any help would be great! Thanks

You should be able to press out the caps using a bench vice, and a few sockets.

If you have a decent sized vice, you should be able to do it without too much trouble.
Be careful when you press the new caps onto the "cross" so you don't bend the tiny needles in there
Get the caps pressed until they juuust about hit the cross, and slide the cross into both caps, if you see what I mean.

When I last took my driveshaft to a shop to get the universals pressed out, they took it in back and beat the stuffing out of it with a big hammer. After that I always did it myself. If the vise isn't enough to get the old one out, I use a big ball peen hammer and a drift, alternating sides, to get the old one free. My 6" vise always works fine for installing the new ones.

I have a small bench vice that might work, if I need to use it to get the new ones on. Should I replace the oil seal on the trans as well? Does any one know the correct size u joint? I'm seeing 2 different sizes for my car at auto zone. Thanks for all your help guys I'm going to do this, this week so ill keep everyone posted. Thanks!

Most likely the "7260 "small" u-joint. (2 3/8 wide)
I don't change seals unless they are leaking.

If your vice is too small, you can use a large "C clamp"

Ok so my shaft hooks up to the hub yoke in the rear and it looks like two clamps are holding the cross in. Do I remove the clamps or is there another bolt I'm not seeing? If I remove the clamps how do I re fit the cross back in to tighten down properly?

Remove the clamps, when you do and pull the drive shaft you can see the u-joint caps fit into the flange to keep them centered.

When re installing when should I put on the retainers? After I screw back the clamps or before?

Before, they keep the u-join held together.

I ruined a good Williams Bros. socket with a 3lb sledge changing a U joint.
