Almost certainly needs a rebuild, but I'll take it over a parts store rebuilt unit any day and rebuild it myself (if I were still running carbs). Even if you have no carb rebuilding experience whatsoever, it would be difficult to do as poor a job as the companies that supply parts stores with their rebuilt carbs.

From little experience I have it looks all right, looks in the same condition the original carb on my car had which had easily been around the clock 2 - 3 times. Find a good rebuild kit from a decent supplier and go ahead. I'm sure SSD will chime in with a full response!

Probably a relatively good candiate for a rebuild, but still a bit of a gamble; could be corroded inside beyond effective cleanup. Also, it's from a pre-1967 170 engine and so is a really small carb (smallest venturi, small throttle bore). It is equipped for PCV, so the car was a California or New York unit or was ordered with PCV which was not standard equipment in all the states until '63.

So am I better replacing a jacked up choke, various old and worn out parts and all the old springs and such that can "plug and play" so to speak?

California cars got PCV instead of road draft tube starting in '61. New York starting in '62. Nationwide + export for '63.

The breather inlet was originally vented to atmosphere. Starting in '64 (California) and '68 (nationwide + export), the breather inlet was ducted to the carburetor air cleaner.

This holds for all makes -- not just Mopars.

If that is true the BBS on the '72 slant I just bought is really old!

Ok I remember where I got '65 from. 65 was the year the SB BBD's got a wire and stud to mount the air cleaner.

Digicam crapped out. I'll get the GF to take a pic and I'll email it to someone.
