I am disassembling the 1968 V-8 904 I got to put the guts in my 1979 slant 904 case. I ran into a snag. I removed all the snap rings from the output shaft, but the governor won't slide off the shaft. It slides fine until it hits the groove for the lower shaft bushing snap ring, then stops dead.

Close inspection reveals a very VERY thin raised ridge around the inboard lip of the snap ring groove on the output shaft. It looks like the output shaft was pushed up hard against the snap ring and run so a ridge formed on the shaft lip. The pick is pointing at the ridge:

Am I missing something? Should I file the ridge down to get the governor off?

Thanks.

What is wrong with the other output shaft, only difference in governor should be the parts you have already removed.

I want to use the double wrap rear band and the five rear clutch drum from the v-8 trans. Can I use those on the 79 slant six output shaft? How do I get the rear clutch pack out withou removing the output shaft?

Remove the small snap ring from the end of the output shaft. it is a round ring use two straight picks (look closely at the end of the shaft it is almost hidden by the splines).
