This is a bit too long to explain in the subject header, so here goes:

I have a 1965 Plym Valiant. It had an older 904 pushbutton style transmission, with the column shifter.

A couple years ago, we yanked the trans, dropped in a 71 dart 904 trans, and moved the shifter to the floor, actuated with a shift cable and a cable stop mounted on the trans. Now I'm entertaining the thought of putting the column shifter back in (so I can put the bench seat back in) - does anyone know if there's a way to adapt the old shifter to the newer transmission? Can I shift by a single cable with the column shifter? Any workarounds anyone else has tried?

Use a 1966 column & linkage set-up.
(66 was the first year for the mechanical shift linkage)

thanks doc =)

anyone know of any workarounds short of getting another column? if i can't fab something up, then i'll resort to getting another column off ebay. it's just that parts for valiants are hard to come by here.

You might be able to use the 65 columm shifter with the late trans, but you would have to fab up a cable and brackets. Lever ratios could become a problem, they have to be correct. I really think Docs suggestion is the best.
