Well, I've searched and searched for the casting number on my /6 block. I've done a search here and checked every location that I've seen members suggest and for the life of me I can't find mine. I've looked on both sides, below the head in the front, below the alternator, on the back below the head and no luck. The truck is a '76 but I was told that the motor and tranny (auto) came from an early '80's car. Any suggestions for where I go from here? I need to buy a bearing kit so without the casting numbers is there a way to tell if I have a steel crank or cast? I'm not even sure if the casting number will give me that info. Any help will be appreaciated. Thanks
Mike

Mike,

If you have an early 80's engine, then it is a cast crank. I had pulled off my cylinder head before I saw the number you are looking for. It's stamped into the block deck on the passanger side-front. Everyone insists that you can see it without pulling the head. Maybe the alternator was in my way. If it is a steel crank engine it will have 225R in the number.

Hope this helps.

Gilly :D

Most are on the upper block surface, back by the alturnator, some later engines have the number along the same "block rail" but further back and stamped-in from the side, not the top as shown below.

What is cast into the driver side of the block?

Thanks 60Pioneer. I must have the bastard of all blocks. Doc, where you show a number, I only have the letter E stamped there. I went all along the deck top and side and no dang number. Any more places to look? By the way, where your picture is shown by the alternator bolt holes, mine does not have such a big variation in width. It seems wider down the whole length of the block with just a slightly larger spot where yours shows the number.

If the block has been decked would the no's be obliterated?

My Mopar Performance manual notes "The cast crank engines can be identified by an "E" stamped next to the engine number (i.e. 225E)". Looks like you have a cast crank engine there.

Hope this helps,

Gilly

Thanks everyone for the help. I'm going to assume that I have a cast crank /6 and hope that someday I'll bump into that dang casting number. This site is really a wealth of information and I lurk here quite a bit. Wish I had more things to offer here and hopefully in the future I will. Again, thanks for the help.

Well, I did finally find a stamped number on the passenger side back on the block just under the head, but the numbers don't make much sense to me. It says 7B4(or maybe A)75505. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Also the rocker arm has adjustments for each valve so can I assume that its mechanical lifters? Thanks again.

7B475505 sounds like the last 8 charactors of a serial #. Beginning in 1968 the whole or partial serial # was stamped on motor, trans. and two places on the body. The 7 would more likely be the year 1977 and B is the Hamtrack MI assembly plant. If the motor has adjustable rockers, 1977 is probable.
