i am in some need of some tires for my 65 valiant. stock bias ply was 6.50x13 which basically comes out to 175/80/13. now the only tires i can find seem to be "trailer tires" is there anyone who actually makes a real 13 inch tire for our cars, that will hold up like any normal tire would? especially for our cars which are on the heavier end for 13's now days

You're better off getting some 14" rims with

185 75 (4.5" rim width)

195 70 or 205 70 (5.5" rim width)

14's are a good upgrade for our old A bodies. Your mileage may even go up a bit!

The last 13s I found were Hankook. My local Discount Tire got them for me overnight.

I see no reason why milage would go up with 14s. A different tire then stock would mess with your mph reading, and could either make your mpg look better, or worse.

Going with 14" wheels gives you a Greater Selection of tires!, and depending on the wheels you choose, a greater selection of brake upgrades. MPG? I don't know about that? MPH. Yes it does effect it slightly, but if you're rollin' on 13" bias-ply, you got other problems than speeding.

A larger diameter tire should mean that the axle will have to rotate slightly slower at any given speed the car is traveling.

Slower axle rotation means reduced engine RPMs.

Reduced engine RPMs should result in better MPGs.

Going to a larger rim doesn't necessarily mean any change in axle RPM or overall MPG. The critical factor is overall tire diameter. 13 and 14 inch tires can have the same overall diameter, but the 14 inch tire will have a shorter sidewall. A short sidewall will give better handling, but unless you go to a 14 inch tire that has an overall larger diameter, a 14 tire will not necessarily mean better MPG or a different axle speed.

I would change to a 14 inch rim for greater choice of tires as well as rims.

I prefer the stock rim with dog dishes, I like the look a lot, with s semi gloss wheel, and a very narrow white wall.

As for tires choices it seems the firestones are a good way to go, there is also a kumho solus, and cooper trendsetter that was suggested in forabodies.

It's a complete stock car, no need for special brakes, or superbeetle handling. Just a old cruising hunk of steel, which taller side walls equal softer ride

The 13" dog dish hubcaps fit the 14" rims just fine.......

I tried getting a set of these a year and a half ago and was told they were discontinued. Its getting hard (and expensive) to ride on 13s, I'd suggest upgrading to 14s as well.
