Ballast resistor

Compression
Head Gasket
Valves

Timing

Points, condensor, plugs, coil.

Wiring, connections, switches, and so forth. Pretty much hands on to troubleshoot.

Do you have a Factory Service manual?

Test the ballast resistor first. A new one is relatively inexpensive, and is a must have spare in your glove box.

Seems like? Either there is spark or isn't... pull a plug and leave it attached to the wire. Hold the plug against the block or any other convenient ground while someone cranks (or use a remote starter switch) and watch for spark to jump across the gap. You could use the coil wire to eliminate the cap/rotor.

First place I would look:
If your engine fires & tries to run while starter is engaged, but as soon as key is released no run, suspect a bad ballast resistor. It can be tested with ohm meter disconnect any wires connected to resistor first. If test shows high resistance, it is no good, if test shows roughly 0.5 to 1 ohm it is good.
