I'm planning to switch over to Synthetic oil soon on my son's engine. What are your recommendations for cold weather areas. We are in central Pa. and we see some cold. Right now 20 degrees and zero with the wind. Is there a good weight that we can run year round.

I have been using Mobil I 10W30. I put up with cold weather here in NY too. If you run it hard or do high speed driving in the summer months, you may want to mix in one quart of 15W50. I use an oil cooler, so 10W30 works for me year round.

The only oil I have run, since 1976, is Quaker State 10w-30. This is in my race cars, and my street cars. A lot of people knock Quaker State oil, but they sponsored my Z/SA 65 Valiant, and I have never had an oil related problem, using it. My 86 Toyota P.U. with a 4cyl engine has 278,000 miles on it, with about 25,000 towing a 5,000 lb race car trailer. Use it in New Jersey winters, and Florida summers.

Gotta love those 22R engines. Just as tough as the F type engines in the Land Cruisers (I have an '88 FJ62 Land Cruiser myself. 190K miles). Good to know there's another Toyota dude here :P

For oil, I've always used a higher viscosity when using full synth. When I used dyno oil in my Land Cruiser I used Castrol 10W-40, but now I use Mobil 1 15W-50 full synth. Runs smooth as silk. The Dart will get dyno oil until it's rebuilt, but once it's broken in again it'll get Mobil 1 10W-40 full synth.
