I have a cast crank in the 83 D-150, motor is in the early stages of going back together. At the Pigeon Forge slant six meeting I got a "early-heavy" cast crank from Lou.

setting them each on my bathroom scale
the 83 crank weighs 60 lbs
the earlier cast crank weighs 75 lbs
a whopping 15 lbs difference,,,

the early cast crank does have the timing gear still on it, so that may account for a pound..

looks like the weight difference is in the center and end counter weights.

a question here,, the motor that I am building for the 83 D-150 will be a low RPM torque motor, I will be using the heavy truck flywheel, I have a heavy 3 pulley front damper, wondering,,would a heavier crank help in the torque department?
The truck has a 3:23 rear end, and an OD tranny, one of the issues was the truck would run out of steam if you hit any kind of incline on the highway,, wondering if more rotational mass will help?
I could get the heavy cast crank checked out and use it in this build if the extra weight is good in this application...

I know somebody who may want the light crank though.

Definately not much to note on the low RPM side, the cast crank really shines when you need high revs and need the motor to spool up quick and recover after the upshift.

The heavier flywheel will help get the heavy vehicle motivated, but your shifting may delay a bit as the synchros get eveything in line during the shift.

Good to know you can find the light cast crank in 83 motors, at least some. Let me know if you want to sell it.

I doubt you would notice any difference on your app.

well,, I am going to use the heavy cast crank in the 83 D-150, I'll match it up with a heavy damper and flywheel..
the journals and bearings check in spec for size, I put it in the 83 case, end play is on the high size but in spec.
I am taking it to a shop tomorrow to get it checked for cracks and polished,,
I'll save the light 83 crank for a future project.

My bathroom scale always shows 15 pounds lighter!

when doing the daily weight in routine,,, I figured out how to make the bathroom scale read a pound lighter,

set the beer bottle down and out of hand before stepping on the scale...

2 different cast cranks? Learn something new everyday.

The cast cranks or any crank in general for the slant six is 60lbs as light as they go? Just was wondering always thought a real light setup would be cool maybe help climb the rpm wall?
