Post subject:  Mustang GT 12.5 rotors?

Has any one used 2005-2010 Mustang GT 2 piston calipers and 12.5" rotors on the front of an A-body. I have searched and searched the web no luck. I know people are running the 13" cobras and that was my plan but I can get a smoking deal on the calipers and rotors that are take offs from a brand new mustang like less than 100 miles on them. I dont see it being much diffrent than the 13" cobras. Any one know something I dont know that may cause some issues or why they havent been used.

Sounds like a good idea to me. What is the rotor thickness - 1.1" like the Cobras?

The hat thickness is 30mm or 1.190. The total width bolt flange to hat or out side to out side is 48mm or 1.889.

I was thinking of this too and thought a Mustang spindle could be used with a new control arm.

I am working on an "M" body Diplomat by the way and going to see if a rack and pinion would work as well.

giezy It can be done but thats alot of work on the control arms and you would have to do all the math and check the geometry for the diffrent spindle. The reason I decided to go with this set up only using the rotors and calipers from the mustang is you can get them for a good reasonable price as take offs. But if you had to get the mustang spindle then that can get real expensive.

I have all the parts for my swap and the rotors are at the machine shop getting turned to hubs. Had a minor setback when I was laid off from the govermnet contract I was working. But I am working someplace different now and making progress slowly.

there are some aftermarket control arms made for oval race cars that use the screw in mopar balljoint that is where i was going to start.

have some pic's of your turd down rotor would love to see how you are going to do that to that way you can service the bearings still

I got the Hubs back from the machine shop. They cut the rotors hat section off, turned the snought down a tad for the new rotor to slip on and be hub centric, also help locate the rims. And they turned the outside diameter down alittle just to allow the rotor to seat on the hub.

I cant wait to get these installed. Hopefully in the next week or 2. I am going from 9in drums to 12.5 rotors with dual piston calipers. Here is a rough price break down so any one looking at doing this can have an Idea.
73+ abody disk break spindles used from junk yard. $120.
Ball joint addapter sleves. $40.
73+ abody used rotors from junk yard scrap pile $20.
Bearing seals dust caps. $30.
SN197 Mustang Take off 12.5 Rotors, calipers and dust sheilds break hoses $200.
Moser 3" long wheel studs $32.
Machine work for the Hubs $80.
So far About $522. Not including new steel break lines and master cylinder required.

Also need to fab up a caliper Bracket.

Cool.. I always have a bunch of rusty old and thin F body Rotors around.. Time to cut them down and Make this project on my volare..


Would the Stock F Body master cylinder work for the Front 2 Piston Ford Calipers?

Slow progress but its still moving forward. I got the rotors installed on the spindles to start mock up. Measured the gap and bought my material for the Caliper addapaters. I need to finish the CAD program and then I will cut the brackets on the plasma table. Once they are done and test fitted if there is intrest more brackets could be cut. I also plan to make the splash sheild work to keep the area cleaner by using the mustang splash sheilds and factory mopars blended together.

The K-frame was pulled and I welded over the poor factory welds, boxed in the triangled holes and the lower control arms are ready for the stiffner plates to be welded on.

What Wheel Diameter would be needed to run this setup?

I would assumme 17" - Which is what I run on my volare in the summer currently.

I have no 17" winter Tire / wheel setup as of yet.

Once you get the Cad and Plasma Table fired up I would be in for a set.

These brakes are S197 mustang brakes. I have never seen anything smaller than 17s that where the stock wheel size for that year mustang. I would think you should be able to get a decent snow tire in the 17s but I don't really now about that white fluffy stuff here in southern AZ.

I got the templet made but have not had the chance to get to the shop and run the plasma. The holidays have kept me away from the car and having to fix the truck and shutteling the family every where after I wrecked the wifes durango.
