i think my valve cover is leaking...so this weekend i would like to replace it and see if it stops my leak. there was oil everywhere s i power washed it all off and drove it arround today going to look tomorrow to confirm. my question is this. can i use black gasket maker(silicone/RTV) sealent to seal the cover to the head? or shud i hunt down a fel pro gasket or equal? |

You need to remove the valve cover to adjust the valves every once in awhile...... So I wouldn't be glueing it on. I like the rubber ones, you can reuse for awhile. Smear some white grease on it so it doesn't stick to the head. |

There's a good chance it is.Quote: can i use black gasket maker(silicone/RTV) sealent to seal the cover to the head?
Yes, but (1) it won't work well, and (2) you'll regret it next time you have to do a valve adjustment, and (3) it's harder than doing the job correctly with the right gasket.

It's just a Fel-Pro gasket. Since you are removing the valve cover, it would be a great time to check the lash on the valvetrain! ~THOR~ |

You must use a gasket, there's very little clearance between the top of the valve cover and the rocker arms. They might hit w/o the aditional spacing the gasket provides. |
