Holy mackeral! You should see the wiring on my new 52 Chrysler.
Someone used a Ford ignition switch and mounted it under-dash. The high beam and turn indicators are wired to light up when you hit the brakes.
None of the dash gauges work. Whoever wired this thing clearly had no idea what he was doing.
Now comes the real trick, rewiring the car to get everything working properly, without disabling the car.
I hope I can find an original wiring diagram.

My youngest had a Chevy LUV with field-expedient wiring (That's being charitable.):

Charging wire stuffed around the alternator post. No lug, no nut.
Masking tape on mashed-wire arrangements that should have been splices.
The fuse block was missing. Completely. No fuses in the circuits. :shock:

Surprisingly, the thing started, charged, and ran well enough.

Yeah, it took a while to sort it out.

Well I finished the first thing on my list. The ignition switch is properly done and back in the dash. Though there are a few accessory wires that I need to trace.

The next thing will be getting the headlight done. They turn on now, but when you turn on the high beams, the lights go off.

Then I have to tackle the dash.

All of the original gauges have been bypassed, because I guess the previous owner had never heard of a 12--6 volt dropping resistor!

The only gauge working is the oil gauge, but I think it is not compatible with the newer engine or something. The needle maxes out. I doubt a 318 is giving me over 80 psi.

There is no speedo cable either. Oh and when you hit the brakes, both the high beam indicator and turn signal indicator comes on!

YIKES!

The ignition switch was the work of two days, the rest will probably take two months!

I bought an old farm truck many years ago. One of those $350 and get it out of here things. Drove it for many years.

When I got home I looked under the dash. The whole truck had been rewired. 14 Ga. Red. Every wire. :shock: :lol:

The worst part is trying to trace unknown wires. There are a couple of accessory wires coming from the switch, I have no idea what they do.
There is even an aftermarket switch on my dash going up in to the window pillar. Oh what fun.

This morning I figured out that the guy wired the heater fan switch to the electric fan on the radiator.

AARRGGHH!!!

I hates wiring..then when someone messes with it ....EEEEERRRRR...my truck has two switches one in dash ...no idea what it does/did....other under dash ,kills engine..makes a nice anti theft device....and we wont even get into radio and dash wiring yet

It is nice to know I am not alone. If people do not know what they are doing, I wish they would just leave things alone.
If I find wiring is too messed up, I may just strip the car and and install and EZ2Wire kit (half the price of Painless).

That actually maybe the best route to take before you waste a lot of time and effort in chasing/tracing wires. That way YOU would KNOW what goes where and what it does.. I am not afraid of wiring, but i sure dont like it, especially if its someone elses bag of worms...
