Question- On my car which was a manual transmission originally. Are the 2 black wires that run down to the back -up light switch just a ground loop? In other words no +12V to either one of those wires? I checked them for voltage and had none, so I was just wondering

Thanks,

Rick

Rick, both backup lamp holders provide ground for backup light circuit.

Starting with diagram A at rear of car back up lights use violet conductor that runs to driver’s side kick panel terminal #4, dashed line (showing standard transmission alternate switch location). On diagram B dashed line, Violet conductor than goes to bulkhead connector #6 where as it passes to engine compartment the conductor changes color to black with white tracer terminating at backup light switch.

The feed side of backup switch than returns to engine side of bulkhead connector at terminal #7 as black with white tracer, on the dash side of terminal #7 the conductor changes to white. That white conductor is terminated on B at wiper switch.

So in other words power is supplied from B on wiper switch VIA white conductor and passes through fire wall changing color to black with white tracer to backup switch. From back up switch a second conductor returns through fire wall changing from black/w to violet all the way back to rear of car.

With the car ignition in run position there should be power to one side of the backup light switch. Once gear selector is in R, power should pass through switch to both lamp holders at rear of car.

If power is not making it to rear of car check all brass connections, and their crimps in the circuit, remake grounds by cleaning where lamp housing attaches to body, and check that switch is electrically competent. Also make sure switch is aligned properly when shift lever is in R.

Hope this helps.
