| Post subject: | Old body filler and fiberglass- ok to use? |
I am making a meaningful effort to finish the bodywork on my brother's Duster this year, and possibly even this month. I am at the stage of having to apply body filler and fiberglass to repair dents and holes, but all I have on hand are products I purchased several years ago. I know the stuff that has been opened is unusable, but what about the filler and fiberglas materials that have just sat on a shelf unopened? Is it safe to use those? Thanks from an autobody neophyte. |

Bondo tends to dry-out over time and that makes it harder to mix and apply. Most body shops have a can of bondo "honey" that they can use to "thin-out" bondo. Fiberglass resin will crystalize and the hardener "degrades" over time. Crystilzed resin can be "repaired" by heating the container in hot water. Degraded hardener will turn to a darker color and it will take longer to set / harden. ( it may not even harden completly) The simple thing to do... mix and apply some samples and see if the material mixes, applys and sets-up the way you like & need it to. DD |
