Being tremendously lazy, I was hoping to read the tag on the 8-1/4" rear under Casey's truck to determine what the ratio might be. This is a 1982 D-150, automatic transmission, A727

The tag has 217 on it. Not very helpful. The rear appears to be a SG.

Any input on likely ratio? I was thinking 3.21 until I saw the 727, so now I'm not so sure. There is a tag on the radiator support, but the numbers don't look like anything I've seen in my A-body adventures.

If not I'll crawl under there and count rotation. Trying not to over do it.

Curiosity won out over laziness.

Looks like a 3.07, and if it is a SG, it's pretty worn. The back cover has a flat on the driver's side, and a bulge on the passenger side. It appears that isn't indicative of the SG. It may be open. The tire was pretty easy to turn against the one locked to the ground.

Now to get some info to Duster Idiot for a distributor! :D

If I remember right, the ratio may be stamped on the ring gear. A 3.07, you did say this was a Dodge right? That sounds like a chevy gear ratio.

Early 80s trucks/vans were getting 2.9 (or is it 2.7? I can never remember that one), 3.2, and 3.5 rear gears most often. I suspect you have a 3.2.

Mopar even put A-727's and 3.21's under Ramchargers as late as 1991...

I know 3.08 is a current ratio under the newer jeeps with the 29 spline 8 1/4" rear. You'd have to pop the cover and check the ring gear stamp, the cover tag is long gone, the 217 is the factory tag #, not indicative of the ratio.

Flat on one side and a bulge on the other doesn't sound like a classic 8 1/4"...

I was wondering about that. Looked like some yard paint with some numbers on the pumpkin cover.

there should be, or used to be, a sticker on the underside of the hood with the options on the truck.

This truck was seriously molested by farm workers. The Lean burn computer is tie wrapped to the passenger fender. The stickers are marginally on the hood, but I didn't see anything legible about the rear gears. It's beginning to sound like the axle was from something else.

It works really nicely though! Seems to be a good little pickup. We're going to make some upgrades to it and get it in top shape. Rolled it across the scales today. Minus people, 3800#.

Hopefully Casey will post up soon.

My friend's van has 2 tags, sg and 3:55 with the 833OD.

No tags?

pull cover ...# stamped on edge of ring gear ....would suspect 3.2 open rear in that truck
