My charge dash light is out and a replacement of the bulb did not fix it. The socket seems fine. Any suggestions on what could be causing the issue?

The dimmer switch is also acting up. If I have it turned all the way to bright all the lights go off. I have to have it set just shy of all the way. The know also pulls off. are there replacements available? Junk yard?

THanks in advance!
Travis

Travis, My dimmer control in both of my '64 Darts acted the same as yours. The quick fix is simply turn the dimmer all the way in both directions several times. If you've counted up to "several" and still have the problem, repeat the treatment.

The slower, but more thorough method is to take the switch out of the dash, unplug the wiring, and spray the round wirewound resistor with electrical contact cleaner while working the knob back and forth as I said before. Don't spray it with WD40 or any oily solution, they attract dirt, dust & dog hair. and will cause your problem to re-occur.

You said the knob pulls off. If you mean that the knob and its shaft pull out of the switch, the catch for the shaft is probably broken. There is a small button on the rear of the switch that is supposed to be pressed while gently pulling on the knob and the knob and shaft come out. I have never seen this happen, but it gets written up occasionally, so I know it happens.

The Rock Auto online catalog lists three light switches for your '69 Val. The only difference I spotted it the prices. That site also lists alternative part numbers, in case you'd like to try other sources.

"Fraid I can't help with the "charge light". I am not familiar with the dashboard in your car, sorry...

Thanks ATB. The knob is what is pulling off. The rod is still rotating in the dimmer switch. I probably just need a new knob, or i could try an adhesive product, I guess. Replacement know will probably be a treasure hunt though.

I ordered a new switch as the dimmer problem has been like this for a long time. How much of a pain is it to get the switch out? Looks like there's a special nut on the front. In a perfect world that is what is holding in and I won't have to do a contortionist move to get it out of the back.

Unfortunately this ain't a perfect world, and the world of classic MOPARS is a perfect example. I found a post on another board that mentioned the knob being "bonded" to the shaft. That says "adhesive product" to me. I would try a slow curing superglue or epoxy. I would bet that any elderly Chrysler in a junkyard would have the same switch and shaft, but the knob might be different.

The switch bezel (that "special nut") is indeed the only thing holding the switch in place. The ideal tool is a spanner wrench, or snap ring pliers. I usually use a screwdriver in one of the slots and push it in the direction that turns he bezel counterclockwise. Sometimes two screwdrivers in opposite slots can work better, but holding them in place and turning the bezel can be tricky. Reaching up under the dash and wiggling the switch body can help. Pretty much any of my makeshift methods will cause some scratching to the bezel. Of course if your Valiant is a perfect numbers matching trailer queen show car that might be intolerable.

P.S. Is this what you're looking for?
