Post subject:  Alternator SOS

Hey guys,

Just had a pretty scary moment. I went to leave friends house and the car wouldn't start, drove fine to their house. Well I got one of them to jump me and left. Driving home my dash lights started to fade. So I get to a light and I toss it in neutral and start rev'ing. I'm thinking that will spur the alternator to charge it and my lights will start get brighter. Nope. Now I'm just trying to make it home a few miles down the road, so I take off like a bat out of hell. I had to be going 90 and my tach was reading 1500 rpms... I turned off my head lights (it's dark out) to give me more time. I just barely made it to my apartment, as I pulled into the spot my car started to beep (the beep you get when you turn off the car...). Such a close call. In my mind, my alternator is bad. Anyone give me any sort of confirmation? I'm going to check the alternator wiring tomorrow to make sure nothing came loose (just installed it a week ago, it's a 120A Alt for a 91 Dakota I think).

Did I mention this is the second battery that died? This one I just installed on Saturday...

Help!,

Might be Voltage Regulator

Post subject:  Fixed but deeper problems?

Hey guys,

So I got in there today with the intention of swapping out my voltage regulator per emsvitil's post. I figured the car is 37 years old, probably need that stock piece replaced.
Well anyway, I went to check the connections on the alternator and I found that one of the connections from the voltage regulator was broken.

Ok, so not a big deal after all. I pull it off and went to put a new one on and noticed this.

It looks like it got melted... Only the tan color wire melted, the green one was perfectly fine and still connected.
I'm wondering if this is a sign of deeper issues (like the alternator is too big for the voltage regulator wires) or if it was just a bad connection heating up (I hope :) )

Well I swapped out the voltage regulator while I was in there and checked all the other wires. I didn't get a chance to jump it as a down pour started.

Thanks for the help,

Hey guys,
After I charged the battery I started the car but no voltage from the output terminal on the alternator. I took it off and advanced tested it. Needless to say, it failed. If anyone ever considers buying a TYC alternator, don't. It was cheap and "brand new" but it didnt even work a day. Going to fork out the money for a Delco or equivalent name brand alternator.
