Today was a red-letter day for the bucket of bolts we've been working on for nearly four years.

We made some shims to place under the coil spring that sets the pressure that the waste gate opens up at... and adjusted it to open at 15 pounds.

Freddie wasn't ready for what happened next; He was driving, and made the mistake of standing on it, once he got it straight, on the freeway. It was in second gear, going about 40 mph (running street tires) and what happened next was unprecedented with that car: it started spinning both rear tires hard enough to smoke them, the rear end tried to come around, and before Freddie could get out of it, it was at 90-degrees to the highway...

We narrowly avoided a rollover, and decided that driving that car without slicks on it was not a good idea.

Took a couple of minutes to clear the acrid smell of burning rubber out of the cabin.

That was with 15 pounds of boost.

Has me wondering what 20 pounds will feel like... :)

This has been four long years in the making, but today made it all worthwhile.

Gonna be really interesting, trying to hook it up...

Thanks for all the help, information, and encouragement! Tom Wolfe was particularly helpful. Without his excellent advice and mentoring, we wouldn't be anywhere near this level of performance at this point.

You guys are the greatest!!! I appreciate all the interest you've shown and the comments you've made that have made this possible!

Can't WAIT for the local strip to open up so I can start trying to hook this thing up...

That should be interesting. :)

Stay tuned...

Bill, in Conway, Arkansas, trying to wipe the grin off my face....

Kool beans, Bill. Now get the "tuneup" done, and bring it to a slant six race.

Dare I ask what size street tires?

Probably not like the one on the left I would assume.

Josh,

I don't even know what size those street tires are but they're not very wide; maybe 5".

Thanks for all your help, Charrlie!!! I appreciate it!

Yes, after we get some particulars nailed down, we'll surely be looking to lock horns with Aaron, Tom and most everybody but Will; I think he's going to be a little out of our league... a LOT out of our league, actually!!! :)

See ya at the races!

Bill

The tires I posted are a 255/40R17 and I believe a 195/75R14. Never mind the compound differences!

Great job Bill !!!! and thanks for what I think is a compliment. But we are all in the same league, learning from each other and passing on information. My car is just one big experiment designed to try ideas and get new guys motivated. Hopefully we will meet soon and tell some stories that are too long to post. As for now,I am going out to the shop, going to sit in a chair and try to think of the next crazy idea for a slant six.

Will
P.S. Beer will be involved.

Will, it WAS certainally a compliment, but as they say, more truth than poetry.

I got into this game late (four years ago) after a lifetime of normally aspirated V8s, so at the ripe old age of 74, I find myself a newbie at this stuff.

I think the slant six interest peaked some time ago, but it looks like there's a sort of re-birth occurring as we speak, as I know of several serious efforts at wringing well over two hp per cubic inch out of the leaning tower of power through turbo and supercharging.

Your little blue racer is a prime example. From what I have learned through perusing the Internet, nobody else currently running a slant six doorslammer has a car that has the e.t. potential that yours seems to have.

It is super-light (2300 pounds?) is turbocharged, will run on alcohol, and has a purpose-built chassis with all the traction you're liable to need to run exceedingly fast!

I see (old) videos of a /6-powered Simca that looks like it could be lighter than your car, but it apparently is no longer running, or if it is, I don't know about it. Apparently, that car was de-commissioned before I arrived on the scene.

Inofar as crazy Ideas goes, the craziest one I can come up with would be to adapt a Toyota Supra head to a slant six block. It looks like nobody has done it successfully, yet, but I'm sure it has been talked about.

I don't have any information as to the Supra bore center spacing, but it might be close... (close to that of a /6, that is...)

That could be your next step... :)

Bill

Okay Aaron, I'll call you. We still don't have the back two barrells hooked up, yet... This 750 may just be too big for 234 cubic inches... I may end up buying a 600... dunno.

Bill
