Do I need to run a ground wire from the engine block to firewall in addition to the one from the vr to alternator bracket. I'm installing a new vr on my truck this weekend and want to make sure I get it right. Thanks in advance, Sam

The more grounds the better (I guess?). It shouldn't hurt any thing.

Mine is grounded that way, with dual grounds.
I actually go to the ground stud on the alternator from the VR.

Ok all the talk on grounding the alternator, mine has a prong for a ground but no wire to plug into it. Do I just run a wire from the mounting bolt on the VR to the ground prong on the alternator?

Voltage drop can manifest in both sides of a circuit, and ground side of any circuit is the easiest to correct for any voltage drop. Like Ted, I have a ground loop that picks up chasses of alternator, voltage regulator, orange box, and back to battery negative terminal. There is zero voltage drop in this loop because it bypasses all suspect connection points between block, body, body welds, and battery.
