I was driving on I-355 this morning and the headlamps started to flicker. Not flickering as in getting dim, but totally going dark. It only happens in the mornings, and it has happened twice in two weeks. I think it may be a bad switch or dirty contacts. I can simply replace it but would there be any worth to installing a relay to control the headlamps? Pros? Cons? What would I have to do to install said relay?

It's a bad circuit breaker in the headlight switch most likely. The relay article is a good one.

Floor mounted high-low beam switches get exposed to a lot of moisture and corrosive ice melt chemicals during the winter in snow country. Off-on cycling could be caused by a bad floor mounted high-low beam switch shorting out internally activating the self-resetting breaker attached to headlight switch. Though generally once these breakers trip they don’t quickly reset until sufficiently cooled. It’s time for a little circuit testing, wire chasing, and ground connection cleaning.

Yes up grading headlight circuits with larger gage conductors and relay supplied power will improve headlight performance even using your existing lamps.

If I were to use a relay would it be Bosch or Siemens? What gauge wire?

I replaced the dimmer switch and it got rid of most of the problems but I think the problem might be in the headlamp switch.
