Guys, I have an 84 pickup with a slant six... Three times I have tried to replace the steel shim gasket between the intake and exhaust manifolds to no avail!!!! I keep getting an exhaust leak directed at the block from the juncture of the manifolds. I have tried everything I know but NO SOAP! This 84 has to pass state inspection and it will not! Can anyone please give me ideas on how to repair my truck, before I take up drinking, and driving FORDS!!!!!!!!!! Oohhhhh the shame! :shrug:

If you haven't read it, go through the whole thing. Check everything out completely to make sure the surfaces are in good shape.

Ok, for the umpteenth time I removed the manifolds, replaced the thin shim gasket under the intake, installed same, and voila !!!!!Exhaust leak!!!!! Now my arthritic fingers are really howling at me........ S I'm going down to the oilfield supply house and buy high fiber content asbestos gasket material!!!! If it works on 8,000 horsepower compressor motors, it just might fix my prob.... If not then I will be forced transplant a v8 in the old girl..... Cant
keep a non running vehicle...... Details ..........if there is a later....!

Try the orange coloured high temp silicone,I've used it on turbocharged exhaust flanges with steel shim gaskets and its always held,but,if the gasket faces are eroded badly I doubt anything would hold.There is a very good write up on the correct sequence to assemble these manifolds on this site,I think it's in the article section.

Your inspection laws will fail a car for an exhaust leak but pass it with a non-original size engine?

Correct! And it is extra thick and designed to "crush"and seal up any imperfections.

Another vote for the remflex gasket. Had a leak in between my manifolds for the longest time; none at all after the Remflex.

I tried the aforementioned technique to no avail....now we take out the oilfield handbook and put a hurt on the engine...I am going to get this Dodge rolling come what may.... As for engine differences? You can swap engines as long as the pollution gear is in place,Texas only requires you to have the proper smog equipment installed... It need not work.....at least here in the West Texas area... My smog pump does nothing but spin freely....
Some of the metropolitan areas have smog tests, we don't!!! We have too much hydrogen sulfide to worry about...LOL! Film at 11!!!!!!

Ok guys, went and got some asbestos gasket material, and made a steel shim sandwich. Took a short break, installed the gasket and torqued it down! Whereupon and thereto fore it did not have an exhaust leak !!! Excuse me,while I do the Happy Dance........ Dance over, now I am tasked with the job of cleaning out the engine compartment ..... Thank you amigos for all your help.... My next project will be to replace the 3.21 gears with 3.91 or better. I need all the power I can put to the tires thru the A883 tranny. Will keep y'all posted!!!
