Awhile back I got a yard sale set of headers. They were the Clifford "street rod" style. I just test fitted them on my 66 Valiant and found they won't work. I have a high mount start and looks like these are for the low mount. So now the never ending question. Which works the best single or dual outlet? Clifford seems to be the only choice although I've seen some MP headers but they are listed as 67-76 so I guess that leaves them out. The Dutra dual dual looks enticing but, do they produce any hp gain? I know some racers use them so they must work. I was also looking at the Clifford "street rod" headers that will work with a high mount starter. Any suggestions?

Cycledog;

Give Harold Johnsn a call at spitfire headers(1479-474-1551)he is getting ready to bring uot new dual outlet headers for the slant and they are designed around the 63 to 66 a-bodies but he says they will fit practicly any thing with a slant.Im gonna try a set on my 61 Valiant.He also says that they should be $200 or less with shipping included.As for the Cliffords,Ihave a set on my 71 dodge truck(dual outlet streetrod style for high mount starter)with a PROLINE FUEL dual carb setup and a msd 6al on a otherwise stock 82 slant and it really suprised me,it runs like a scalded dog.The cliffords were an easy install toobut in my truck i have plenty of room to work with.

i ran the clifford street rod headers on my 63 dart with no problems. the rear header wraps around the starter, but should work. the only trouble i had was with the power steering box was in the way. the adjuster screw interfered with the front collector. a 1/8" wood shim under the d/s motor mount took care of that. those same headers would not fit my '63 valiant since it has a 170 in it now and everything sits about an inch lower.

I have the clifford shorty dual outlet headers on my 71 duster 225 with power steering. the pipe for cylinder #1 comes probably within 0.5" or 1" of the gearbox. With good motermounts, you should have no problems though. They also still leave a decent ammount of room to manage the starter too.

Mike,
I received your e-mail and those are little bit pricey for me but they are awsome in that you got that kind of performance out of a nearly stock slant but i definataly will have my next set of headers coated with jet hot coating.

Hey Slanted Attitude,
I called Harold Johnson and asked him about those headers, he said that they should be ready in a couple of months. He also confirmed what you said about the price, $200. He said the reason they chose a '63 thru '66 A-body was because that body would be the worst case scenario for installing headers. He seemed like a cool guy, very easy to talk to.
Thanks for the tip, I'm thinking seriously about getting a set of these for my '78 Volare! :D :D :D

Wes and others,

Will those Spitfires be full-length headers? Did he say anything about ground clearance on the early A-bods?

Thanks,

Lou

Hey Lou!
Harold said that they should be fairly short and shouldn't hang too low. I'd like to see some pictures of them before I buy a set.

I talked to harold today, he said the headers will be two piece, fairly short and not hang too low. Also said they would be closer the the block and "sweep forward", using 1 5/8" pipe, come with a gasket and under $200. I asked him if they would clear my "high starter", he didn't know what a high starter engine was so it could be a problem or when I go to the smaller starter it won't matter..don't know at this time. Also asked if it would clear power steering, he thought it shouldn't be a problem. Time will tell. Harold was very pleasant and friendly. I will talk to him more in a month or so when these are to come available. Almost forgot..these will be dual outlet but I suppose that is obvious because they are two piece.

Swinger,

A high starter sits up close to the manifolds. A low starter sits about oil pan level. For example my 66 Valiant has a high starter and my 76 truck has a low starter. It seems to only be a problem if you want to use two piece headers like the Clifford street rod headers as far as I can tell. Maybe cars have high starters and truck low. There a pobably others on the board more knowlegable than I on this subject.
