Post subject:  Goin From 9 1/4" to 10" Clutch

Have 225 out of 65 coronet original 9 1/4".
Want to go to 10". Where can i purchase the reduced head bolts reference in Doc's article on clutches?
Will these work? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/arp-150-2201

The bolt head is much wider than the stepped head OEM bolt, so if you do, you will need to test fit and grind the bellhousing where the bolt heads contact the bell.

I'll see if I have an example of both in my junk and post a pic later.

Stock stepped clutch cover bolt on the left form a 1981 Dodge with the 10" clutch and A-833OD.

On the right is the ARP Ford bolt that works great for the 9 1/4" cover,spec clutch cover, etc... heads and washers are a little bigger so you will need to check and clearance the bellhousing with a die grinder or dremel as these are in a tight location (3spd bellhousing is the worst in this scenario the 4 speed bell is a little more roomy).

tough to get a good close up but it should be obvious on the head size comparison.

I've heard of people using grade 8 bolts for the clutch cover, it probably wouldn't be too bad if the clutch were used for low rpm daily driving and no hard launches (the 10" clutch might come apart before the bolts). I notice that the OEM and ARP cluth bolts all have a smooth shank about 1/4" long to keep the bolt tolerence when torqued down (that allows the correct distance for the disc to operate without the cover being warped, which might happen if you used a fully threaded bolt when you tighten it down and the wrench doesn't "click"). So if using a grade 8, you might find a 1 1/4-1 1/2" bolt with a 1/2" of shank then use a threader to turn threads another 1/4" and trim off the end 1/2-3/4" of threads...

My local NAPA had the packaged 'Mr Gasket' brand clutch bolts for Ford, that's what I used. They look just like the ARP ones with the proper shank.

I use longer bolts on most apps. On my alum flywheels, I run a long bolt (1.25" or so) with a nut on the back, with Loctite.

I also did the 12 point high strength bolts from mcmaster. Worked great on the 10" diaphragm pressure plate.
