Hey everyone! Im new to posting, but have been to this forum from time to time.

I need some help on the rear end of my 83 d150 with a a833. I have a 77 slant with a 2bbl from a 318 and the biggest camshaft I could find on summit racing. The engine has around 40 miles on it-bored .30 over, and the head decked .05, the truck has anywhere from 89,000-189,000. After Dropping the engine In I noticed a good power gain, however, I am not satisfied with my 3rd and 4th gear performance. In fact 1st and 2nd are mediocre. I was hoping for near stock v8 performance but feel short handed. 4th gear is nearly pointless and 3rd gear, well i can go around 85 at about 4k.

The question!

Does anyone know If I can get different gearing for this truck? perhaps something in the 380 to 410 gear range? This is a weekend/hobby driver. Really looking to get the best 0-60 speeds out of this thing.

If I remember right the 4th gear ratio is .71 which is insanely high.

Thanks In advance!

I wish people would really ask questions before doing things like that, the biggest cam on summit isn't all that big (if it was a comp cam you may be rebuilding the motor soon...). 30 over bore and 50 off the deck pretty much keeps the engine close to stock and an aftermarket cam isn't going to help there, whacking another 30 off the head would change that greatly. (a little port blending would help out as well...)

Yes, if you have an 8 1/4" rear you can get anything from 3.55-4.56 for rear gearing...if it's a 9 1/4" same thing (in fact you may be able to find a rear axle with that gearing in the junkyard for a quick swap).

It's an A-833 OD for mileage and light duty, .73 isn't too bad for OD (new cars have double OD in the .5 range....)... best bets will be to run 3.91 or 4.11....but it also will help to get the compression up past 8.4:1 also especially with a 2 barrel and mostly because of the bigger cam...

You may have 3:55's if the OD is a factory install. I have a friends 80 model B100 van with the OD and a slant. I did an "RV" port and polish job on it. Dropped a 77 model rebuilt super six carb. I took .060 off the head. Stock cam and valves. It woke it up. He was able to quit using mid grade as it lost the spark ping.

Does anyone know if its possible to just replace the ring gear and pinion? And if so is there a place to buy a new set up besides going to the junk yard.

Is there a way to identify my rear axle type?- I looked at the back but there was no tag, there was however 10 bolts, and the rubber plug is about midway on the right. Not sure if this means anything.

Best to ID the rear and gear is the underside of the hood on the driver side. There should be two white tags w codes and what they mean for your truck. If not there then go to the passenger side and look down in the cowl for the metal plate w codes. Pull those codes then go look in the slixer gallery and I have codes from my 84 posted, see if they match any of mine.

You can get R&P from the yards just look for the codes of what you need and maybe even find an LSD.

I've got 833 w 3.54 rear LSD and I don't think it does too bad. All I've got is GM HEI and a holley 350. Keep us posted.

10 bolt and oval rear cover is an 8 1/4" rear.

New R&P can be had new at several sources here's one:

http://www.ringpinion.com/b2c/ProductDe ... DiffWizard

I am going to say since you are kind of inexperienced with the diff. you should take it to a reputable rear end shop and have them swap the gears out, it's not a beginner's job, and it's not a "bolt in and go".

Rear ratio swap with new gears in a classic 8 1/4" is about $700 parts, labor, and supplies...if taken to a shop.

A junkyard rear axle that is a bolt in runs about $250 at worst (u-pull)

If we knew where you live someone might have the things you need close by.

Good source............. www.moparts.com

Did anyone ask if you found a tag on the rear?
