Girlfriend and I were driving to the dog park and thought it'd be great to drive the Dart. Park is a few exits away so we took the freeway. No issues here. Car is running great. Braking fine.

Exit the freeway. Brake coming to the signal. Fine. Wait for the light to turn green, take off and suddenly a loud thud can be heard and felt coming from my front wheel area. I pulled over immediately. I couldn't see anything wrong or causing anything to hit rub or anything. Almost felt like a flat thudding around it was so bad.

So back in the car, drive a little more and it persists. Notice it is worse the faster I go, slows with wheel speed. Engine speed didn't affect it so it is for sure the wheel.

Pulled over again to get a look. Still see nothing all looks good, and besides the thud it was driving and turning fine. So we continue to the park which is just down the road. I then notice that when i brake with some force, such as a stop sign or dip in the road it stops the thudding.

As soon as i let off the brake force even a little it starts again. This all makes me assume it is something with the drums. Dog park ended up being closed for some city training thing so we went on our way back home, took the streets this time just incase some sort of failure.

Problem continued, seems very tied to wheel speed and still stops when braking, but doesn't affect handling. Also seemed to quiet down when turning right but not left.

Sound like any common problems? Probably wont have time to tear into it till the weekend so I don't want to think about it all week long without knowing what it may be.

Check wheel bearings and retaining nuts. Check lug nuts to ensure the wheel isn't working back-and-forth on the lugs.

Something I saw the other day; Some of the tread on a car stopped in traffic was seperating from the core of the tire, and flopping as the tire rotated, smacking the inside of the wheelwell as he headed for a side street. You might want to check out all the tread on your tires.

Braking wouldn't affect that though, would it? It doesn't matter what speed if i brake it stops, as soon as the brake is let off it starts again.

After some Youtube searching, it doesn't sound like what other people have posted for bad wheel bearings. Most of those show you need some speed to hear it, in my case its like every tire rotation you hear the thud.

I'll probably try the new set of rims I have which have some better tires on them. Then I'll know if it was the lugs or tires for sure. Easy swap.

So after work today I pulled the wheel. Everything seemed tight, but when I got the wheel off there was a ton of grime on the lug posts, so I cleaned them really well and popped the wheel back on. Short little drive and there was no noise. Guess driving force was enough to wobble it again the grime which hand wobbling didn't show. Hoping it stays away now and that was is, and its not something that will happen again when everything gets warm.
