Hi Guys, I would like to know if anyone paints there manifolds maybe with an engine paint and has had any luck with the paint staying. Getting ready for final assembly and would like to spruce things up.

I have tried several methods none of which have worked yet. I tried VHT high heat, VHT Ceramic and I even tried Barbeque paint. That has worked best but after about 1500 miles I have seen it starting to break down. I think one of the problems in my case is getting the rust and scale off. I used a wire brush and wire brush on a drill but could only get so much.

I would recommend looking into ceramic coatings.

I have used VHT on headers, and if directions are not followed to the tee, it will not hold up. However if directions are followed, light coats, heating and cooling sequence, and not spilling anything on them after installed VHT holds up rather well. Use a color that has highest temperature rating for best result.

Removing rust from an iron manifold is easy, mix some muriatic acid into water, say one part acid, four parts water (yes acid into water, not the other way unless you want a nasty reaction) in a five gallon bucket and soak the manifold until rust is removed; this will take a day or so. This is the same method used to clean a head’s water jacket, and how I cleaned up a set of headers. Do this outside, fumes given off during reaction are irritating, corrosive, and stink.

I have used the POR-15 Manifold gray and it worked well. You can also have it ceramic coated professionally. Look at the ones Doug Dutra had done on polished silver....very nice!

I put this on my headers it's white/old school hooker color/it is so thick/it could be chipped off. used 2.5 cans on headers/have run say 20 hours still nice and white, but can get grease on it.

My opinion, you cant go wrong with ceramic coating. Holds up well under high temperatures. Plus it looks nice as well.
