I have had my valiant running for a while now(not on the road -just idling and aroun the yard a little)and decided to check the compression and came up with what i thought was good numbers-all cylinders were between 135 and 141 lbs and the vacumm is 17 inchs at idle, does this sound good? Also,Im getting a little vapor from the breather on the valve cover when I open the throttle up and hold at about 2500 rpm but it quits in a few seconds ,it really doesnt act like blowby, could this be from 15 years of laying dormant?
Thanks,Slanted Attitude

Hmmmm....6 pounds max variance between all six cylinders? Oh yeah...that's ok. Typically, anything over 10% cyl-to-cyl variance is not a good sign, and you're well within that. As for the blowby.....how long did it sit? Long enough to maybe dry out and stiffen the stem seals?

Compression looks fine, vacuum reading seems a little low, try giving it a little more initial timing advance or check the valve adjustment to get the vacuum up a bit.

Thanks Doc,
Im sure the valves need adjusting ,the car sat for aboout 18 years so just having it running tickles me.The only reason that i havnt adjusted the valves yet is that on my Valiant i have to remove the heater box and just havnt got there yet, still workin on the brakes.

I have personally never seen an A body slant that you had to remove the heater box on to get the valve cover off. My '69 slant was tight, but with wiggling and fidding, it would come off. Give it another try. AC on the other had is another story. With the slant and AC, the valve cover could get trapped by th AC hoses. I still managed to wire the valve cover up, and out of the way enought to get the valaves adjusted. If the valves are real loose, and the stems are carboned up, it might be a good idea to tighten them a little at a time to allow the carbon to be knocked of the stems. Maybe adjust them a little tighter, and run the engine awhile, and then tighten them up some more on a second pass. Also, don;t worry if it burns oil for awhile. That will get better as the engine runs and the rings free up. Good luck, and congratulations!
