It's based on what curve the original distributor had...if you can pull the plate and see what the governor says you can double that number and subtract from 30 and start there....if it's an un touched points distributor I would start at 5BTDC then advance after some test driving to see if you can get up to 8BTDC.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's an early 11.5 governor so you can run much more timing and have a little more room for recurving later...

:wink:

11.5 governor so you can run much more timing
DI,,,not wanting to hijack this tread, but how does the higher valued governor allow more timing.

using the formula given:
(11.5 x 2) -30= 7 initial
(8.5 x 2) -30 = 13 initial

would not starting with 13 as opposed to 7 mean that one would end up with more total advance?

thanks

Sorry that post should have stated much more initial timing.

Points distributor governors come in 2 flavors (early) at 11.5, and (late) 13.

The slant likes a fair amount of initial so it's best to use the shorter slot, so you can set more initial and limit the total to 30, so if he could weld up the slots and go with less slot, then he could run more initial....that being said there is a 'pushover' point where a stock car may not like a lot of initial...so I would say not to exceed 12, on higher compression engines 14 (and sometimes 16) can be used, but I would not go past 16 or the engine will kickback on the starter.
