Ok my timing tab reads 0 degrees, a line which I think is the 5 degree mark, then 10 degrees, and another line which I guess is 15 degrees...when timing the motor get number one piston to TDC and timing mark on balancer to 0 degrees on the tab? When I get the mark to 0 degrees on the tab the car will not start, however when I get it to 5 degrees on the tab it starts right up, but after getting to full temp, driving down the road and back it shuts off when the clutch is pressed in...timing is a bit confusing for me so any advice is appreciated....Thanks

Ok looking at the Motor's Auto Repair Manual from 1964 it shows my timing tab to be from a 1961 Slant six, if that makes since. Guess the motor is timed from the 5 degree mark as the 0 degree mark would be on a 1964 timing tab, it is marked with permanent marker to show its position. Guess that's why it cranks and runs from that position.....Also decoded my engine to make sure its a 1964 225 Date is 3-13-64 and motor code is V22...

Are you sure the outer ring of the crank pulley hasn't moved in relation to the inner ring?

Yes, looking at the service manual the timing tab isn't for a 1964 its for a 1961, that's a 1964 Auto Repair manual....

I would support this question as well. The slant isn't that picky and should fire up whether the static setting is at 5ATDC or 8 BTDC...if it doesn't fire with a 5 degree change something is really off (damper, timing chain, cam phasing), typically the 'no fire' zone on a stocker is almost in the 18-20 degree zone if the engine is in really good condition (you sure it's not the case of a 1964 damper being used on a 1961 timing tab and the position is off more than you think?)

Could be, but the timing tab in the service manual for a 1961 matches the one on the motor, the tab it shows for the 1964 looks different.....?

Got Slant back running...bad condenser......replaced and running now.....ordered piston TDC stop tool from Jegs to find true TDC....

Thank you for the picture, now to verify marks TDC on number one piston and timing mark on crank shaft pulley should line up with the 0 degree mark on timing tab?
