Is some play acceptable? I ask because I know pretty much nothing about carburetion. The 3 Holley 1945 carbs I have all have a little play, some a touch more than the others, but they all have some. All I have to compare is the throttle body on 5.9 magnum V8, which has zero slop.

Some play can be compensated by your idle mixture adjustment. If your around 2.5 turns out your fine. It is bad when you have to run it 4 turns out. You may want to have the shaft re-bushed at that point.

It's chlorinated brake clean that's the seriously nasty stuff. "regular" brake clean is merely explosively flammable. Different types are/are not available in different states.

I went and looked and is was not chlorinated. Dumb luck.

I am going to see how many turns my idle mixture is at and go from there. I found a local guy to rebush the carb for $30 if I pull the bottom off and take it to him.

On my 74 the sticker shows to set it at 750 rpm out of gear which I do...... and the distributor is set at 10 degrees initial.......which is not per the sticker. I recurved my 3755042 distributor.
Based on that it shows 19" of vacuum cold.
Once warmed up, the tach reads about 650 rpm in gear at a stop light.
