Looking to pull a reasonably sized camper with my truck on a semi frequent basis. Would changing my leaf springs over to heavier ones/adding helpers/shock helpers make a big difference in my capacity? Not planning on mtn climbing with it just curious about what would fit that is heaver, dont know too much about it.

Yes. Even within the 1/2 ton category there were numerous spring rates used. You can switch to different rated springs, but you will need to confirm that the springs will work with the spring hangers you have on your truck. Even getting new 1/2 ton springs or installing an add-a-leaf kit will help.

Don't forget to upgrade the front axel with springs of similar rate.

So what kinds should I look for: how do you identify them? By the links in them or? I've already got leaf helpers on and they flat out suck. Could be because they're from oreillys but I think it is just a crap product, been actually thinking about returning them.

Also, would I just get a higher capacity strut for the front?

Your truck has coil springs in the front, not struts. Lots of places sell new springs. You can get the at junkyards, rockauto.com, or other online retailers. Google is your friend.

Give these folks a call:

ESPO is located in Penn., has great prices, will customize leaf spring rate and ride height, and most likely has several front spring options for your truck.
