I seem to recall that the A100 vans had an offset air cleaner housing on the slants. Am I wrong?
If not, which direction were they offset? Toward the engine, or away from it?

I've never gotten to work on a A series van, but I do know that the 71-up B series vans did have offset aoir cleaners on the slant six engine. The air cleaner is offset towards the motor to clear the engine cover. I imagine that A series vans have a similar offset as well.

Unless you are going for a period correct resoration, I recommend trying to use a Bseries air cleaner, particularlyone from the 80s. They will be easier to find and have all the later goodies like a heated air intake system and an adapter on the end of the snorkel for a cold air intake system. A series van/truck air cleaners are likely to be open element or at least not have the heated and cold air systems just mentioned.

My 66 A100 does not have an offset housing, it is just smaller in diameter than a standard housing. Mine is about 9" in diameter while the one off a 68' Dart is about 11" in diameter.

Thanks, guys. I thought there was an offset air cleaner, but didn't know which direction it went. Being as it's toward the engine, it won't work for me. If you saw my pics of the T in the gallery, I'm after something that would give me a bit more room around those twin radiator support rods. I have a cut-down, stock cleaner that will go on, but it's real close to those rods.

Maybe I'm too nervous, or over-thinking things, and won't have any problems once that thing actually gets roadworthy.

Here is an interesting listing for a slant powered 67 A100 that shows both an offset air cleaner AND factory or dealer added AC. If you look close it appears that there is a mount for the AC compressor on the driver's side of the engine. An interesting rig, for sure.

Interesting is a good word for that one. I wasn't actually thinking of an offset that extreme. Apparently, my memory is a bit elusive, and I may have been thinking of the B series air cleaner. My brain cells say it's round, but the hole for the carb neck is off-center of the main part of the housing.

I hacked up a stock housing yesterday afternoon to turn it into a simple open filter and mounted it up, but the one I have is indexed to the carb neck to a certain extent. It may be due to the actual carb being used, rather than any specific vehicle use.

It's a bit close, and if I ever-torque the engine much, I'll be smacking the air cleaner against the radiator support rods, but it'll work for the time being.

Sounds like you are describing a B-series one barrel air cleaner. The offset air filter like the one on that A series van reminds me more of the offset air cleaner that came on the early Ford (pre-68ish) six cylinder Econoline vans and trucks. Maybe somebody swapped a Ford air cleaner onto that 67 Dodge?
