Unless I am mistaken the only way to tell what year slant engines I have is to read the numbers located underneath the head directly behind the alternator area.

If that is true than what do these numbers on the drivers side of the block signify? Image

This photo was taken from an engine that is in a 1983 truck so I thought that maybe these could be good/reliable casting dates.

The Jasper recon engine that is in my 73 shows an 83 as well though so thats why I am confused.

He knows that, he even started his post with acknowledgement to that info, he's asking what the casting numbers mean.

Can you confirm that these numbers Image
underneath the head are the numbers everyone speaks of when they mention behind the alternator.

Seems stupid to stamp identification numbers there.

Not even too sure what to do with these numbers,
4 ( what is that for )
225 ( ok cubic inch )
But the what is the T ( my guess would mean T is Truck, thats the way it was done in the old days )
Then an 8 ( no clue )
And finally a 1 ( no clue )

Also I have confirmed that the numbers cast into the block are a casting date.

I ran across a 64 this A.M that had 64 cast clearly into its side same place as all the others.

My 86 is cast with an 85 ( close enough for how I know they operate ) and I have others that are cast spot on with corresponding casting dates to vehicle year of manufacture.
