You know how much of a pain those hold down pins are to install.......

Pin from backside, thru shoe, then install the spring, then try to install the retaining clip (while pushing down on spring, then hoping the pin stays in place, then trying to rotate the pin or the clip)......


Well, I just installed them the easy way.

The new hardware kit I got had 2 retaining clips per pin because the hole in the back plate is too big for the pin head and you need a retaining clip there too.


Here's the easy way.

Pin from front side.

So it's pin, retaining clip, spring, brake shoe, hole in backing plate.

Press in with your thumb, reach around and install other retaining clip....

You're done....

I've never really had a problem with those retainers. Pin in the back and through the shoe, spring over the pin, put the front retainer in a pair of pliers so the slotted opening matches the pin, one hand pushes on the back of the pin so it sticks out straight, the other had uses the pliers to slide the retainer onto the pin and twist. :shrug:

Many moons ago back in '72 I purchased a tool with screwdriver grip on one end, and a tapered disk shaped casting on the other end that fit over and turned those shoe spring retainer locks with an easy 1/4 twist of the wrist.

The dang thing works great.

On the other hand, my paw looks like a soft shell lobster's crusher claw in that crappie photo above; and they say the camera add five pounds... hogwash

What brand of kit did you buy and where? On my 63 Dart I had to kind of rig something. It is safe but would rather have it to be right.
I too own one of those tools.
