Been noticing it lately but not sure what it is. I used a big screwdriver to kind of listen around and I can sort of hear it when I place the screwdriver on the head next to the valve cover but it sounds much louder when you're just standing by the car listening. Doesn't go away when I apply throttle either. Anyone know what it might be?

Sounds like a lifter...if your engine has hydraulic lifters.

It's mechanical. Basically stock other than the HEI ignition and Super Six setup.

Due to the nature of the sound, I would be looking at an exhaust manifold leak. Then check with a long screwdriver down on the fuel pump.

Since you have mechanical lifters, I agree with this diagnosis. Use a rubber tube to listen and follow the gaskets around the manifold. A leak should be easy to find.

this may seem a bit easy, but I had a similar ticking sound, spent ages trying to find the source, then one day I removed the oil dipstick with the engine running (forgot why)and the sound disappeared, put it back in and it re appeared...I twisted the dip stick 30 degrees counter-clockwise and the ticking went away...put it back and it reappeared. I have a 1973 Dodge Dart sport 225, no modifications yet..its cheap and easy to try it.

If lifter or rocker or exhaust is not it, try check down at the fuel pump with a long tube or screwdriver. They can be noisy at times, and this sounds pretty similar to that.

Thanks for the help guys. I tested it for an exhaust leak and came up with nada. So I adjusted the valves and once I got to one of the exhaust valves, I turned the adjuster screw to tighten it ever so slightly and the noise completely went away. I figured one of the valves was going to be really loose but it just took about 1/16th of a turn and she purrs like a kitten now.
