How do I remove the inner speedo cable?

I have a 62 Valiant/Signet and have the cable disconnected at both cluster and traany. I have not been able to pull the inner cable from the cluster end or the tranny end.

If it was working, then I think it should come out the top. If it wasn't working, my guess is it is fubar- as in unravelled inside the outer housing.

I got it out from the top after using some heavy elbow grease.

I think the inner cable was held in by lubricant that had dried hard over the years of non-use. I have cleaned the inner cable and it looks ok to use again.

Any idea on how I could clean the inside of the outer speedo cable of the congealed grease/lubricant?

Thanks
