Did '74 Darts /6 come with catastrophic converters? Not California. Or did that start in '75?

The requirements went up in 1975.

So generally speaking it would be 1975.

If it wasn't needed to pass (some trucks, Honda CVCC) it wasn't installed.

Mazda may have been able to continue to use a thermal reactor on the rotaries.

Model year 1975 started the addition of the convertor...(so you would find it on A-bodies that started manufacture per the door sticker about August 1974).

No '74 vehicles had catalytic converters. Some '75 vehicles did. Not all US-spec Chrysler-built vehicles had them until '79, though California and high-altitude vehicles pretty much all did starting in '75. Not all Canada-spec Mopars had converters until '83 or so.

That's it! My '74 Dart Sport that will get a '78 Super Six and '80 auto trans (904, or other- I'll have to check) will have slightly bigger diameter pipe and NO converter. Thanks guys.

It doesn't really matter. In Washington your car is old enough to not need an emissions test anymore.

YEP! My old truck has two 2" pipes with no mufflers and I still come under the 95 DBL limit. I think the age also pertains to the car being made before 1985 or over 25 years old. As in you car need to be made before 1985 and/ or be over 25 years old.......

But not old enough to escape the Federal law criminalizing removing or modifying factory installed emissions equipment.

White this statute only applies in Washington and subsection (3) only applies to vehicles less than 25 years old, it is worth keeping in mind:

Revised Code of Washington 46.37.390. Mufflers required--Smoke and air contaminant standards--Definitions--Penalty, exception

(1) Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, bypass, or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway.

***

(3) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the engine of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle not equipped as required by this subsection, or which has been amplified as prohibited by this subsection. A court may dismiss an infraction notice for a violation of this subsection if there is reasonable grounds to believe that the vehicle was not operated in violation of this subsection.
This subsection (3) does not apply to vehicles twenty-five or more years old or to passenger vehicles being operated off the highways in an organized racing or competitive event conducted by a recognized sanctioning body.

So, even if it is a crappy glass pack, every vehicle operated on the roads in Washington must have a muffler. Remember that if you live in an area with overly bored or thorough State Troopers or police.

The subsection seems to read, that if your car is over 25 years old you don't need a muffler.
