I can't seem to figure out what is causing this sound. It seems like it's mainly coming from the left rear but my directional hearing has failed me in the past and I'm sure it will again. This is on a 71 Duster with 9" drums all the way around.

As I'm driving, I hear a "tick tick tick" from the rear that speeds up as the car speeds up. I can't really hear it very well unless it's very quiet out and I'm off the gas or if the sound is bouncing off of parked cars or center dividers.

I've taken apart, clean and inspected all 4 brakes. I sanded the drums down a bit to make sure it wasn't a crease in the drum causing the shoes to pull away and tap as the car rolls. I've had the thing jacked up and spun the wheels individually, with and without the tires attached. No noises at all. As soon as I let it off the jack and pull it out of my driveway, the sound is back again. I've also swapped wheels/tires to make sure there was nothing going on there and the sound stayed with the car after the swap.

Another weird deal that may be related was that for a while when I'd be off the gas while taking a sharp right hand turn, it would almost sound like I was dragging a tin can on a string from behind the car. Once I was out of the turn and going straight again, that specific sound would go away. That happened for a while and I haven't been able to reproduce it for some time now. Ticking has always been there though.

Anyone have any clue on what it could be?

Can't be a wheel cover or a small pebble. I've had rallyes on and steelies with different tires and the sound has stayed consistent.

Wouldn't a wheel bearing make more of a constant noise rather than a ticking?

I was thinking last night, what about a U Joint? I'm not sure what they sound like when they go bad but it was a thought.

How about a loose Rallye Wheel center cap?

How about an 18 inch ty-wrap ziptied onto your drive shaft by a "friend"?

Can you repeat the noise with the rear wheels on jack stands? Either engine running in gear, or with engine off?

If You had a video camera You could mount under the car You might be able to pinpoint where the sound is coming from.

It's not wheel related since it's happened with two sets of wheels. One of which I didn't have caps or covers on of any sort.

My friends aren't into the zip tying of drive shafts, who are you hanging out with?

I can't repeat the noise any way other than driving the thing. I've spun the wheels back and forth with the rear jacked up. Spun the drums with the wheels off. Spun the axle with the wheels and drums off. Nothing. I even put it in drive and got the wheels turning with the rear end in the air and there were no noises at all. Yet once you drop it to the ground and start rolling, it's just tick tick tick the entire time.

Does it do it in Forward and Reverse?

I know this post is a month old but check for worn rear drum backing plates.I have had, and still do several cars that make such a sound. The shoes wear grooves in the plates and the the shoes make a chirping sound with drum run out.My 79 Chrysler is doing it some times. It goes away when the brakes are applied but may still be there with light pedal pressure. Just a thought.

One thought gleaned from one of my favorite film noir movies on the subject of ticking coming from the rear, also featuring some real nice late fifties Mopars.

My truck had a ticking sound coming from the rear and it turned out to be the front universal joint. The sound traveled down the driveshaft.
