What is the 1 and 2 used for next to D?

When is it okay to use them and why are they there?

904 is designed to be able to select a gear, and hold it. "1" is first gear, by selecting 1 transmission will stay in first until an other, 2 or D, is manually selected. Same for 2 except when in 2 during brake-a-way ( starting from stop) trans will shift firstly into "1" upshift to second and hold that gear disallowing an up shift to third.

You being from a cold climate, 2 is often used to brake or aid drivability in snow and on ice. Same for 1, there are times when not shifting out of first gear is desirable both for holding in said gear to a higher rpm than governor would allow, or for braking down steep hills, or whatever.

Police who drive automatic transmission equipped pursuit vehicles start off in one and then manually shift up through until they are in D or OD if the vehicle is so equipped. This way they can control the gear changes like a manual transmission and get a bit better initial acceleration.

So you can put it in 1 and floor it as long as you're not at 6000rpm's for 10 minutes..

Some people say you shoulnd't use 1 for burnouts.. I've been using D for drifting on the snow.. Never did a burnout cause my tyres have too much grip..

Now the fun begins... I have been manually shifting my 904s since I got my first Dart in 1988. Careful not to shift to reverse!!
