Picked up a 4 speed trans and old hurst shifter at the Don Garlits swap meet, today. Not sure what it is out of. Aluminum case, iron tail housing. Two shifter mount bosses. Front bearing retainer a little over 5 inches. Will this trans work in a 64 Valiant with a slant six, and a 3 on the tree. What mods will I most likely have to make, if any? I know the bell housing will need to be changed. Which one would best? Thanks.

Hey Charlie missed you at Mopars w/ Big Daddy got to see your race car though. I believe the aluminum cases are OD versions shift it into high gear and see if it is 1:1 or if it is an OD ( output turns faster than input). Will need a driveshaft made a slant bell housing for a 4 spd and a shifter tunnel sheet metal for the floor. The od and non od transmissions have different size bearing retainers this will drive your bell housing choices.

5.125" IBR =1975+
Aluminum Case =1976-1980
2 shifter mounting bosses= Long Tailshaft Truck Transmission?

Sounds like you got yourself an A-833OD...check the articles to see what your shifter attaching point is like to see if it's an A/F body or a Truck (B/E body to) transmission, the long tailshaft version...

It will fit in your 1964 if it's the A/F body version, you will have to cut in a hump for the shifter, you can keep your pedals, but may need some parts to make the linkage work right. The long Tailshaft version, will not be easy to adapt on a pre-1967 A body, and may just be easier to get an A-body main and tailshaft and have them swapped in.

This will be a wide ratio tranny so your rpm drops from 1-2 and 2-3 will be fairly significant....but with the OD you can use better rear ratios and keep your mileage (3.55 is a good all around rear ratio in a light A-Body for this transmission)...with race rear gearing especially at 4.11-4.56 1st gears is almost non-existant (you can start in 2nd gear as 1st gear with 4.56's on the street...even in a 3200 lb duster).

Thanks. I new the info was on the site, somewhere, but forgot the articles section. It has all the info I need. Looks like I have the B/E trans. Not going to do the swap very soon, so looks like I have time to either trade, or work out the details. Figured it was worth the $100 price, even as a "core".

If I remember correctly the pedal linkage / Z Bar from the 3 speed all worked when I installed the 4 speed in the Valiant long ago!

I was thinking, I could use the existing clutch linkage. At the most, make a "adapter" plate for mounting the torque shaft ball in the correct location on the bell housing, if needed.

That's about the only other item you'll have to do, I've seen one of these and a late A-230 floor shift put in a 1966 Dart and the relationship of the ballstud is an inch or 2 off being a direct bolt in and line it up...
