When that happened to me it was a cam gear problem (twice).....and it cost me a bundle.

Is this a Comp Cam?

Doc was the last source for hardened oil pump gears... Not sure I'd go to bronze, especially if the gear sacrifices a bit...I'd prefer the iron one and put a magnet in the oil pan....

If he has any left, you will need to know if the rotor shaft is keyed or not...

Andrew,

Here is what I do: I take a stock used pump from a previously running motor, clean it up on the outside, and run the darn thing. I have done this every time since learning about the failures in the early 2000s and have had no problems with gears, ever. I put one or a few washers under the stock relief spring to adjust max pressure to be around 60 psi. I also use stock reground cams (Oregon), although I used a few Crane and Mopar cams bought before 2000. I haven't even taken a used pump apart yet as I believe that might disturb the internal workings.

Slant on,

Lou
